Chelkovski Igor

Igor Chelkovski is a Russian-French artist and sculptor. He was born in 1937 in Orenburg, USSR. He graduated from Moscow College of Academic Art with a specialisation in theatre set design. In the mid-1960’s he entered the Moscow Nonconformists circle. For a long time his primary medium was painting until he began to sculpt at the beginning of the 70s. His work of that period is significantly marked by suprematism, conceptualism and pop art. 

Chelkovski’s was closely linked to the famous magazine A-Z, a compendium of Soviet unofficial art of the 1970’s — 1980’s that was published in Paris and New York from 1979 to 1986. Chelkovski was an editor and an illustrator of the magazine; his works accompanied the texts of such theoreticians as Boris Groys and Vladimir Paperny. He currently lives and works in Moscow and Paris.

Chelkovski’s personal exhibition were held in various venues in Russia, France and Germany. His works are in private and public collections all over the world including the Georges Pompidou Centre, Paris; the State Tretjakov Gallery, Moscow; the State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg; and the National Centre of Contemporary Art, Moscow.
