Ekaterina Rozhkova was born in Moscow. She graduated from the Moscow Art School at the State Surikov Institute (1982–1987) and the Department of Staging at the Moscow Institute of Cinematography (1987–1992, V. A. Bogdanov’s Class). In 1994–96 she was a trainee at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo, Japan.
Her careful attention to detail, monochrome, color, and texture work demonstrate the influence of Japanese culture. Ekaterina almost never portrays people; she is obsessed with the world of objects. Ekaterina's works are composed of images of everyday objects such as architectural forms, clothing, and mechanisms, from which she masterfully constructs large, elaborate series.
“What would someone come up with that is novel?” It is only possible, I believe, if one begins with a personal story” (Ekaterina Rozhkova). The romantic approach, with a specific state of emotion, plays a dominant role in Ekaterina Rozhkova's landscapes. The environment in her works is perceived as a subjective experience rather than an objectively existing reality.
Ekaterina Rozhkova has shown at international fairs, biennials, and festivals such as Art Miami, The Armory Show, and ARCO. Her works are in the collections of the Novosibirsk State Art Museum, Surgut Art Gallery, Ekaterina Cultural Foundation, MMOMA, ABN AMRO Bank, Petrocommerts Bank, Flemings Bank (London), as well as in private collections in Russia, Estonia, Japan, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, France, Israel, UK, and USA.
