Grytsuk Nikolay

Nikolay Grytsuk was a Soviet painter. He was born in 1922 in Preobrazhenka, Primorsky Krai (USSR). In 1937 his family moved to Novosibirsk (USSR) where he lived most of his life. He graduated Moscow Textile University. Grytsuk is mostly known for his emotional urban paintings of Novosibirsk (a city to which he dedicated his biggest series that included a variety of techniques and a generous colour palette), Moscow and the cities of Crimea. In 1950’s — 1960’s he was mostly working with watercolours; he later went on to include gouache, tempera and markers in his artistic practice. Grytsuk’s work was heavily influenced by postimpressionism and lacked the common pictorial gloom of the Soviet underground. He died in 1976 in Novosibirsk. 

Grytsuk’s work is in the private and public collections around the world including the State Tretjakov Gallery, Moscow, and the State Russian Museum, Saint Petersburg.
